Eddie Ochana is poised for back-to-back titles in the Chicago Poker Classic's championship event.

Eddie Ochana is poised for back-to-back titles in the Chicago Poker Classic’s championship event.

Eddie Ochana holds commanding chip lead with 5,340,000 of the 17,175,000 chips in play nine-handed, eyes back-to-back Chicago Poker Classic championships.

The 687-player starting field in the $2,000 Chicago Poker Classic Main Event is down the final nine with a familiar name atop the chip counts — Eddie Ochana (pictured). Ochana, a Chicago-based professional poker player, is the defending champion of this event having outlasted 745 players in last year’s installment earning $217,810 and a $10,000 WSOP seat. He’s back at it in 2015 and is in the midst of unlikely run that sees him holding 5,340,000 chips with just eight players between him and a second Chicago title, $274,595 and another $10,000 seat.

Ochana, who holds better than a two-to-one chip advantage over second place Brian Kleinhenz, is in good company at the finale. Fellow Chicago pro and last year’s Event 1 champion, Chris Karambinis, sits on his direct left with 2,465,000 while Alexander Doroshko claims 2,425,000. Danny Hannawa, who began the day second in the counts, currently has 1,225,000 and is sixth. The table’s short stack, meanwhile, belongs to Todd Breyfogle.

The $2,000 Chicago Poker Classic finale began Friday with the first of two starting flights. In all, the tournament drew an impressive field of 687 players generating a $1,220,112 prize pool that paid the top 63 finishers. Notables such as WSOP Player of the Year runner up Brandon Shack-Harris, gold bracelet winners Aaron Steury, Nick Jivkov and Chris Tryba, John Dolan, Aaron Massey, Zal Irani, Prince Gaspard, Phil Mader, Matt Kirby and Kevin Saul all turned out for the high-buy-in tournament. Of these, only Kirby (28th, $6,772) and Tryba (54th, $4,734) finished in the money. Others leaving the tournament with a payday include Erik Roussakis (14th, $14,007), Fadi Hammad (21st, $8,333), Jose Serratos (40th, $5,625), Jesse McVicker (43rd, $5,625) and Nicholas Aranda (52nd, $4,734).

The final table resumes Monday at 1 p.m. with 34 minutes remaining in the 25,000/50,000 with a 5,000 ante level. Each remaining player is assured $26,318 with the tournament’s champion locking up $274,525 and a $10,000 WSOP Main Event seat.
